Growth Mindset

We are growing. Not just in size of our staff and clients, the growth we are referencing today is developmental.

Our staff puts in many hours each day producing financial statements, processing payroll and accounts payable checks, and entering contribution data. But every other month or so, we take some time for staff development. We keep up on industry knowledge, personal and professional development, emotional intelligence, and team building – all to produce a better product and service for our clients.

A Look Back

Last month our training was very timely for the end of year. A great way to look back on our 2022 and how we want to start our 2023. Something most of us naturally do personally. But do you do the same for your ministry? Take stock of all the amazing things that you were a part of the past year and then set some goals for where you want to go in the upcoming months?

We hope that you do, but if you need a little encouragement in that area, we wanted to share one takeaway from the training. Leveraging a Growth Mindset with Dr. Heidi Grant, a Science of Leadership Expert; by utilizing the Rule of 3.

Growth Mindset Rule of Three

  1. Where were you?
  2. Where are you now?
  3. Where do you want to be?

In a Fixed Mindset, Dr. Grant says, you tend to only focus on the now. She wants us to look towards growth and ask all three questions to better acknowledge the person/ministry/task/etc. as a whole.

A Look Forward

You can also utilize this Rule of 3 to provide better feedback with your team. Maybe give it a go in your next employee check-in and see how it goes. Or just try it on yourself for the next quarter and see how you look at your mistakes, challenges, and growth in a different light. Then go and test it on someone else.

It’s Contagious

Another one of the interesting takeaways from our training was how to encourage a growth mindset in others. You can utilize these three concepts to help share your growth and encourage your subordinates to do the same.

  1. Draw attention to your mistakes.
  2. Share stories of your past challenges
  3. Focus on rewarding progress and persistence.

Now, when doing this things, the goal is to describe a success story. Something achievable and inspirational. Not just drag yourself through the mud. We are all human, but we are all capable of learning and growing from those mistakes. And that’s the piece we should be focusing on.

More Growth Resources

As the calendar flips over to another year, we encourage you to do a little dreaming about your ministry’s future. Ask those Rule of 3 questions. Listen to the still small voice of what God has in store for your next year. And maybe meet with your accountant to see the financial possibilities.

If you are going into this next year feeling overwhelmed and stressed out, maybe you need to learn how to ask for help from Dr. Heidi Grant. Or, as a leader if you want to hear more about this growth concept, tune into this video.
