Why We Do What We Do
Not just us, but all of us. For those who are new to our monthly Chapel recaps, you can start here with the why behind having these each month. If you’ve been around awhile, here are some notes from our October Chapel.
This one was a little different, because we incorporated Chapel into our Homecoming Week adventures. (Different venue, different day, look at us adapting to change.) But the best part is we had almost all staff together in one room for this one. 💙
Which was a great time to remind us of our mission. Not just our mission as worker bees; but as Christians.
The Gospel is Why We Do Everything
We all have someone we answer to. For children, it’s their parents; for students, their teachers; for workers, their boss; and for Christians, it’s God. Sometimes it would be helpful to know the rules we are supposed to follow. For work, we may have Standard Operating Procedures. A teacher might provide a syllabus. Parents often use their words to correct in the moment. But for Christians, we have access to scripture. Scripture has the final word.
“And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.” – 1 Thessalonians 2:13
Our speaker challenged us to think about who actually gets the final word in our life. There is wisdom in wise counsel (the Proverbs reminds us of that); but ultimately, we should be looking to God’s word to find answers. If God’s word says it, we should submit to it.
Because when we do, we get to experience life abundant; life in the Spirit. Living out the fruits of the Spirit. How lucky we are!
“We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.” – Colossians 1:3-5a

Work & Food
Since we have this ultimate authority, these scriptures, we know we are called to work hard. But to work hard for the glory of God, not for working hard’s sake; or at the detriment of our family, children, or mental health. As Mark’s gospel reminds us, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” – Mark 8:36
Christian leaders don’t ask is it Legal? We ask, is it Righteous. Not, will this make us Profitable? But, does it honor Jesus?
We can also look to the scriptures for our source of food. Feeding on our daily bread so that we are able to make righteous decisions in the moment, when we are well fed on the ultimate authority.
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12
In conclusion, our speaker asked us based on this trajectory of daily bread, seeing scripture as ultimate authority, and living out the fruit of the spirit – what is your next step of faith? Where is God calling you? In your daily tasks. In your work tasks. And in your comings and goings. Listen to his word and prompting and carry on good and faithful servant.
