Answering The Call

For this particular journey, we must travel back to 1975. The year the Vietnam War ended. Elton John and ZZ Top were at the top of their game. The movie “Jaws” was released. And, most importantly, the V8 was added in the Mustang II.

During this inspiring year, Glenn Miller – a pastor’s kid from a small town in the Midwest – heard a call on his life. A call to full time ministry, and to prepare with college. Which may seem odd if you saw his report cards and rejection letters.

Preparation for the Call

As it often goes, the first few jobs you acquire in life somehow have a way of helping you in ways you could never have imagined later in life.

So too, with Glenn’s careers. First a job in payroll, then accounting, church administration, and then seminary administration. (Is this starting to sound familiar to anyone else?)

Humble Beginnings

Through friends, God had a way of speaking to Glenn and showing him the path he was being led down. As he spoke to his wife, Kim – a degreed accountant who was staying home to raise their children – she also saw the vision taking shape.

Kim most loved the opportunity this company could provide to other moms who wanted to work part-time. Keeping up their professional credentials while still being available for their children. (Can you guess how many MM moms this vision has impacted?!?)

With a game plan in place, Glenn headed to lunch with some friends who gave him sage advice: “That industry doesn’t exist.” “You don’t have the money.” “Don’t do it! ” All except for one other risk taker in the group.

But either way, Glenn and Kim felt they had no choice but to Answer The Call that was being placed before them. In 1989, they officially began with their first client. Who, I might add, is still with us today. (Hi, CPBA!)

Thirty Years Later

According to the SBA, 20% of business fail in the first year. Businesses most likely to fail are those started by someone under 30. (Did we mention Glenn was 29 at the time?) And the number one cause of failure is because the market doesn’t need or want their product or service. (Hello again, sage advisers.)

Funny how God doesn’t need SBA statistics or well-meaning friends. He often thrives in the opposite.

“Call unto me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know!”

Jeremiah 33:3
