Flexibility: Core Value #3

After our January Chapel, we decided to run a series on our core values because it may not be something our clients see all that much. But even if you don’t see it written out, our hope is that you still get the overall experience; even when you might not put the same label on it that we did. And that’s okay.

So, let’s get started. If you missed Core Value #1, you may want to start here.

Core Value #3

Change is constant and therefore expected.

  • Our products and services will change regularly to meet our client’s current needs
  • Jobs, roles, responsibilities, work flow, hardware, software, etc. will all change regularly to meet our client’s needs

There were a few definitions for flexibility, but the one that applies here is: “the quality of bending easily without breaking.”

EVERYONE at Miller can quote this core value. I don’t think it would be too far off to say that someone says this once a week. Whether we are problem solving a predicament with our client. Or onboarding a new client or new employee. Or perhaps changing our technology, office space, or the way we update our normal tasks.

We are great pivoters. (Not sure that is a real word…but it’s the one I want to use.) Snow again? Let’s move the route days or times, or remind clients of our online upload capabilities. Missing a key piece of the puzzle to finish up the financial statements? Let’s check with our other team members, or give the client a call. Where is the PAN? Okay, that one we just have to get ahold of the client, can’t move forward in payroll without that!

For an office full of rule following, by the books type of people, this value is the one that stretches us the most. Remember how I said everyone can quote this one? Because the world is constantly changing (ie. the new paid sick leave policy). And we love for things to stay the same. So when we quote this value, we sometimes may want to roll our eyes, but we also know if you don’t adapt, your business could die.

So this flexibility reminder is a great one in the way of how we relate to people and our lives in general. But not when it comes to good financial practices or IRS laws. In those, we are much more of our rule following selves. (sigh of relief)

Stay tuned for Core Value #4 coming next month.
