Counting the Count
If you’ve been around for awhile, you know the drill with our Chapels. For those who are new, you can start here with the why behind having these each month. This month, thanks to our January speaker – it’s always the same, and always good – we learned about the value of counting the right things.
He had four points for us to look at our lives in this new year.
- Examine the Books
- Keep Records Clean
- Prepare the Budget
- Maximize Your ROI
Now, as accountant type people, we understand these without much explanation. BUT. When we look at these as an audit on our own lives and not our work, things took a different turn.
First, when we examine the books of our own life and go line by line of who we are as a person, do those lines match up to look like Jesus? Would someone outside of our circle be able to look at our audit and think, yep, that guy follows Jesus.

Then, as we strive to keep our records clean, are we protecting our integrity? Integrity is proven in those quiet decisions, in those small rounding errors of our life. God’s logo in the one on our financials of life, does that seem to match up?

Next, as we prepare the budget of our lives, do we have a clear plan; while also looking for where God is leading us? Are we leading a faithful & flexible lifestyle? Our speaker paraphrased a quote from the Purpose Driven Church, by Rick Warren, where he said “…let leaders plan and implement strategies, but trust God for the ultimate growth and outcomes, making the church healthy so growth happens naturally…”

Lastly, as we learn to maximize our ROI, would God’s investment in us prove to be a good one? Can he look at your life and say, well done my good & faithful servant?

Our speaker ended with this reminder; as God’s word says, only two things last forever. His word & people’s souls. When we come to the end of our days, we will be judged by what we have done.
And that’s our encouragement and challenge for the year ahead. When we take a moment each week, each month, each quarter – and take stock of our lives and the example we are setting. Let’s use the lens of these four prompts to help us adjust as necessary. God’s blessings on your new year!
