Maintaining a Sense of Community

One priority of the new office is to make sure staff has space to maintain an environment of community, and a breakroom is in the works to do just that.

A special “Kitchen Committee” is in place to make sure the space is functional and inviting. The committee’s plans include using bold paint colors, comfortable tables and chairs, microwaves, toaster ovens and a large fridge, ways for employees to play music in the room, and maybe even occasional donuts, bagels or snacks. The idea is to encourage employees to spend their lunch time in the room with other staff members, which will cultivate relationships and help maintain the benefits of a small business, even as the company grows.

A core value at MMS says that change is constant and therefore expected, so being prepared for different ways that the new office will affect the company is important. The breakroom is a place for staff members to chat about things other than work. There are many benefits to having a unified staff, like being able to adapt to changes, being better able to serve clients through teamwork, and making coming to work more enjoyable.

While there are serious reasons for spending time and money creating such a breakroom, it hasn’t been all work and no play. The planning included a Kitchen Committee fieldtrip to IKEA.
