Servant Heart: Core Value #5

servant heart - core value #5

After our January Chapel, we decided to run a series on our core values because it may not be something our clients see all that much. But even if you don’t see it written out, our hope is that you still get the overall experience; even when you might not put the same label on it that we did. And that’s okay.

So, let’s get started. If you missed Core Value #1, you may want to start here. That way you can find out our values are clients first, excellence, flexibility, and respect. Now, on to #5.

Core Value #5

To work in this organization, you must have a servant heart for:
  1. Serving and supporting churches and not‐for‐profit organizations.
    • Since this is our clientele, it should go without saying. We have to serve and support our clients. We have been so fortunate to retain staff who have no problem completing this task. For most, it’s what first drew them to Miller Management in the first place.
  2. Following and supporting the top leadership.
    • This means supporting what our founders started and following how current leadership adjusts to the growing needs of our organization and our client’s needs.
  3. Supporting management with diligence and respect.
    • Similar to #2, we follow what those in position over us feel is the right direction. This doesn’t mean we can’t have helpful questions, it does mean their is an order and ultimate direction to follow.
  4. Helping each other in a kind and caring manner.
    • Again, no explanation needed here and we have the best people whom this comes naturally for them. We are very blessed.

All of these sub points can really be summed up into Servant Leadership. Now, before I lose you, check out GLS’s write up of Patrick Lencioni’s 2019 talk on the subject, it’s worth the read. Essentially, servant leadership is really the only kind of effective leadership their is.

When your leadership and culture focus around those key elements, it really isn’t all that hard to uphold those servant heart standards for yourself.

One way that we have found helpful to keep this top of mind is to pray.

We encourage staff to gather together for weekly prayer times and also encourage individual prayers when those corporate gatherings are not happening. We also try to check in with each other and with our clients, so see if there is a need of prayer in their life.

Stay tuned for Core Value #6, coming next month.
